Prop Houses Open This Coming July 5th (2019)

It’s that time of year again where everyone gets together, grills hot dogs, and tries to blow everything up but their hands.

This year July 4th falls on an awkward day, Thursday. That means some people, with their hands hopefully completely still intact, have to get back on the production wagon the Friday after festivities.

As is our custom we’ve asked so you don’t have to. So without further ado (and even fewer explosion jokes related to limb safety) here is our list of prop houses who will have their doors open for you this Friday, July 5th:

Remembering Jim Marin of Art Deco L.A.

I recently found out that Jim Marin, formerly the owner of Art Deco LA, had passed away in Las Vegas.

Jim was bigger than life. As an old biker boy his biggest downfall was his passion for his collection of great Art Deco Furniture lamps, rugs and decorative props.

Al from Al’s Studio Rental had sent me down to meet him at his first location in Hollywood. I never forgot our first meeting. I was walking in past his sign. “Studio Rentals only Everyone Else Keep Out!!!” When I walked past the sign and this big gruff guy in a t-shirt and blue jeans popped up over the large piece of furniture screaming obscenities at me until I walked up to him and introduced myself. At which point he melted into a kitten. Ya he was course, but he looked like he was homeless (or a Hells Angels Biker). I fondly remember him having a big heart though, with a soft spot in his larger than life persona.

Art Deco LA was first located in Hollywood next to Opamp Technical Books (also now gone sadly). He then relocated to the valley in what now houses ZG04 Decor before moving one last time to Lankershim where NEST Studio Rentals is currently located.

Nice to know that all locations that Jim picked turned into Prop House locations. He knew what really worked.

Jim was a colorful character of the Prop House owners and he will be missed. Funny I can still see his mischievous grin.

NEST Studio Rentals – Sometimes You Need to Dance

DSC05492One of my favorite things about going out to visit prop houses, catching up on their recent acquisitions, is that you never know what you might find or who you will run into. NEST Studio Rentals is no different.DSC05489

Just last week I ran into Richard Walker dancing around some of the sofas!

Holiday has been working tirelessly to expand her great collection too. A perfect stop for contemporary dressing from smalls and larger pieces to modern kitchen dressing and contemporary office furniture. Of course it’s all in great condition too, something that can be a constant worry for prop rentals.DSC05481

When you have a chance swing by NEST. It’s packed to the brim with things you already know you will need and others you’ll find out you needed.

Contemporary Dressing for a Contemporary Space – Nest Studio Rentals

NEST Inventory Updates

Boy I hadn’t been to NEST Studio Rentals in a little while, not since I dropped off books at least.

They have really grown into their space. Their inventory was always great but they are brimming at the moment! Their emphasis was originally a lot of Contemporary Furniture, very clean too, but that appears to have expanded to quite a plethora of other categories.

Most notably to me at least was their wonderful kids desk dressing and room dressing. Toys, staplers, and artwork that could really influence a set are available. Some are even organized by color!

Nest Studio Rentals

Tagged as a ‘fresh prop house’ with contemporary interiors, Nest Studio Rentals has moved into its new digs at Lankershim & Hart.

With her unusual flair, owner Holiday Dapper (yep, that’s her name) established a prop house for the commercial, TV, and film industry with a fresh look. Originally located on Vanowen St., Nest Studio Rentals took just short of 2 years to outgrow that space. Holiday obviously has a flair for success!

Nest’s new location has over 22,000 sq. ft. of contemporary furniture, rugs, lighting, drapery and art used by top designers and stylists.
