New Year, New Location – Inter Video Makes Their First Move in 6 Years

What’s better than an Inter Video?

An Inter Video with a loading dock!

Dock it to me! Here’s a shot of their new spot for easy pickup/dropoff.

After 6 years at their location in Burbank Inter Video, a video sync/computer playback and technical set dressing company, is making a big move over to Valley Blvd. Now you can access their large inventory of all kinds of computers, monitors, televisions and projectors (not to mention other electronic dressing) with the comfort of easy pickup at their dock.

Is that both practical and prop related tech dressing or are you just happy to see me?

They are now closer to the Arts District, where a lot of Commercial and Event people are located, just off of Valley Blvd on the other side of the train tracks near ABC Caskets and Enox Events.

So go check them out at their new location:

Chatting with Artery Props & The Auditorium – Music to Everyone’s Ears

Of course we all know how to dress a garage band scene, and maybe even a largescale concert. But there are always little details that can be missed. That’s why it always helps to ask the experts when you’re picking out your items. What kind of speakers should be used? How about microphones? Not to mention which of their guitars would match a certain time period.

Everything but the band!

I swung over to Artery Props and The Auditorium to see what was new in their inventory. Those two have been working steadily for almost 10 years to maintain and grow their prop house.

Pick your favorite flavor of drums! (Mine is mint)

The two properties, both in the same location, work primarily for the film and television industries renting out their instruments (The Auditorium) and their uniquely positioned custom artwork and print shop (Artery Props). I always like seeing what their most recent and/or favorite acquisition is. Right now, apparently, it’s this sweet “axe”:

Looking for a keytar? They’ve got plenty to choose from. Need a specific colored guitar? Pick which shade of the rainbow.

Keytars and keyboards

Mark and Victor have also put almost a decade into expanding their “Band Art”. From cleared posters and flyers to CD and record covers, they’ve created cleared album and band art for you to swing by and take with you. They’ve also got 3 large format printers that they work with to spit out much of their work.

From high school band to the real deal

Something I hadn’t known before is that their inventory expands beyond their space too. They’ve got extra multiples and some of their larger pieces just a quick skip away that can be picked up at the same time.

It’s always nice to watch something grow from it’s original conception, and Artery Props and the Auditorium fit that bill nicely.

Chatting with Warner Bros Hardware – The Unsung Hero of a Set

Knock knock – Who’s there? – Knockers

How would Kramer in a Seinfeld episode ever be able to make one of those crazy entrances into Seinfeld’s room without a doorknob? How would Jamie Lee Curtis ever be able to lock that window to keep that horror film bad guy out of the house if it wasn’t for window lock? And what would Scrooge talk to if there was no door knocker to change into his old colleague Marley’s face?

Anyone looking for some decorative door plates?

What is Hardware? Also referred to as builders hardware, hardware is made up of metal products that most of us take for granted every day. They are used in our homes and other commercial buildings, everywhere really. Every latch, doorknob, hinge, cabinet handle, and door knocker helps to tell the story and add the final touch to a space. As you can imagine there are a large variety of styles, shapes, sizes and metal types used for hardware. Depending on the time period, location, and even the character who lives in a space, the hardware chosen can be drastically different.

The real question is, where does one get the right hardware and how do you know it’s the right hardware? There are quite a few spots of course, but today I wanted to chat about the Hardware Department at Warner Bros run by Mike Hollis.

He has been a guiding hand and curator for the past 35 years, staying on top of the art and the history of hardware. You can find his latest location downstairs under the Prop Department on the Warner Bros lot. He can help you through not just the history, making life easier with their great selection. Why don’t you zip down and take a look, and tell Mike we said hi!

WB Hardware Rentals will *handle* anything you throw their way!

Chatting with Enchanted Studio Props LCC

Entrance to Enchanted Studio Props
Entrance to Enchanted Studio Props

I stopped by Enchanted Studio Props to check in on them. They’ve been up and running in Burbank for almost a year now and I was excited to see what they were up to. Moving an operation over from New Mexico is no small feat!

Well, needless to say, if you haven’t visited Enchanted Studio Props since their opening over here on the coast you should zip over and check out their inventory. They have certainly grown. With an expandable space that can adapt as they grow, Daphne and Dave Benavides have an opportunity to keep growing as they find new talent.

Vase plz!

As is the case with so many people in our industry, both Daphne and Dave are not newcomers to the arts in general. Daphne was a performing arts instructor and Dave has been working in the film/tv industry for years, so he brings an experienced eye when finding talent. This has meant they have come across many people to add. You will come across at their space many fresh new artist’s works from California’s central coast, San Diego, New Mexico and many other locales.

Some of the most recent acquisitions represented in their inventory come straight out of the Los Angeles Brewery, many that are not previously known. Their artworks are great additions to their collection of abstract, landscapes, still life, photography and more.

Go stop by, give Daphne a high-five (maybe even Dave will be there), and browse what’s available. It never hurts to keep an eye out for fresh pieces of art!

Old N Country – A Blast From the Past

Stop by Old N Country if you want a little blast from the past. It reminds me of an old little prop house called Billy Woolfe.

I’m not sure how many of you remember, but Billy Woolfe was located on Beachwood Drive in Hollywood. It would soon be purchased by Chuck and Bill to add to their growing collection at Prop Services West (it would then also be labeled The Billy Woolfe Collection).

Don’t bother checking this out on google because I’m older than google.

At any rate, one of the latest prop houses in town reminds me of the atmosphere of the Billy Woolfe prop house. Old N Country is just that, props from a simpler time and place. Their inventory could easily dress a grandmothers house, or just someone living out in Middle America on their little farm.

The collection arrived at the end of 2016 and has continued to grow as they bring more items over from their storage facilities in Philadelphia. If you haven’t visited Old N Country recently, and especially if you haven’t stopped by at all, go and check them out. The cow shaped milk jug is worth it alone.

A little background:

Enchanted Studio Props was originally formed in Albuquerque, NM in 2012. Dave and Daphne Benavides are both CA natives who have returned to be close to family, and the Pacific Ocean. Dave has worked on sets in the Motion Picture Industry for nearly 2 decades, while Daphne is new to MPI having recently retired from teaching dance and running a performing arts charter school. They are both passionate about providing opportunities to local artists. In their free time, they enjoy attending art shows, and taking walks on the beach.

The ESP gallery is open 7:30 to 4:30 Monday – Friday. 5 Ton Access, and free parking for Decorators/Buyers.

Where to Find Modern Tech Rentals

We open to our protagonist working (sort of) on her laptop in the evening with a glass of wine in hand. Suddenly her cell phone rings.

It’s her boss, there’s a big scoop, and she needs to get to the office ASAP, preferably an hour ago!

We finally get to the office where a security guard is sitting inside the entrance at his computer. They wave familiarly to each other as he buzzes her in and our character walks from this quiet first room to a large, open office buzzing with activity; landline phones, cell phones, monitors and television screens abound. It’s going to be a long work night.

—–

The most common kinds of productions take place, more or less, in the here and now. The latest cell phones, laptops and television screens (to name just a few things) need to be present to set the scene. Sometimes the simplest of items can be hard to track down quickly and affordably, especially when you are talking about current technologies with current technology costs (I’m looking at YOU iPhone X).

On top of that, sometimes behind the camera a production needs current technologies. Wifi boxes (MiFis, hotspots), laptops, cell phones and more need to be available for a crew that doesn’t have those items themselves. Where do you rent modern technology, especially WORKING modern technology?!? Oh that’s right, Debbies Book can help with that.

Every child has had love for playgrounds. Swing sets, slides, jungle gyms, animals on springs and roundabouts (merry go rounds). There is really only one problem about playgrounds, one that never bothered kids. They’re rather permanent.

Thankfully we’ve climbed around Los Angeles and beyond to find all kinds for you. Was it so we could pretend we were kids again or was it so we could help you out?
