[Video] A Love Letter to Plywood – Breakdown of Plywood Video

My good friend Tim Hogan, the properties director at PCPA, brought this wonderful video to my attention and I felt compelled to show everyone else the video.

It is called, “A Love Letter to Plywood,” but it is much more than that. It is an excellent breakdown of the uses of plywood and an introduction to how to implement those uses.

Revisiting the ‘In Praise of Chairs’ Video

I spoke with a class of students late last week and brought up this video to them.

I love it. It’s hard to explain to the uninitiated of the weight a prop carries in many scenes. Even a subtle piece that seemingly goes unnoticed to the viewer can still subconsciously imply traits or a state of mind.

So sit down in whatever chair is defining your own character right now and watch it below:

Why Props Matter – Rishi Kaneria’s Insightful Video

It is always nice to see someone toting the significance of props. It’s even better when it’s well edited and brimming with information.

Being a part of the directory for prop sources in Los Angeles (and around the globe) has given me an appreciation for their importance in visually telling a story. Sometimes they are hero props like The Ring in Lord of the Rings and other times they are the seemingly insignificant bulletin board in the background filled with office memos and birthday reminders for the office.

When you have a chance you should really check out Rishi Kaneria’s video essay below:

[Video] The Importance of Even the Simplest of Props

My good friend Tim Hogan over at PCPA shared a video with me that I thought others may appreciate.

From a new Youtube channel, Picture’s Up, comes a video essay about the importance of props for more than just painting a scene. Often times even the simplest of props can indicate to the audience character traits and personalities that would take much more dialog to come across.

Give the video a watch, it’s good, in fact I hope to see more from them:

Great New Invention – The Gaff Gun

I’m always a fan of new inventions, especially ones that make life simpler.

My friend Tim Hogan of PCPA recently emailed me a video of this sweet gadget. Instead of having to get on your hands and knees to lay wire and tape it down, you just walk!

Check out the video below to see it in action. According to the video they will start shipping out orders in December.

Overhead View of I Love Lucy Set

Sometimes one comes across a gem that needs to be shared with the world.

My friend Michael Brittain over at Western Studio Service sent a photo my way. A very rare overhead view of the entire I Love Lucy set. Complete with the bedroom (with the infamous twin beds), living room, kitchen, and Ricky’s club.

Very cool indeed:

A Surprise at Phillipe’s with Artistic Carnival & Circus Design

Pilippe Chester Cable & Wini McKay 1I was in downtown LA grabbing my favorite sandwich at Phillippe’s. Went in the back for a seat while flapping my jaw over its juiciness when a picture of Chester Cable from Artistic Carnival & Circus Design appeared out of no-where!

Pilippe Chester Cable & Wini McKay 2He was juggling the hell out of a massive table… with his feet! Immediately I gave him a call. Apparently he has the Guinness world record for what I can only describe as juggling a table. I looked at my table, at my feet, thought about trying it myself – and sat down to eat my French dip sandwich instead, all that foot juggling made me dizzy and gave me noodle knees.

I also managed to find a video of him performing this stunt (and earning the world record):

Happy International Day of Happiness

UN LogoIn 2012 the 66th General Assembly of the UN stated that all member states should:

“…observe the International Day of Happiness in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness-raising activities…”

So why don’t we stop for a second, take a deep breath, and remember where we are in life. Remember how fortunate it is to be in a place where creative works have a space to flourish. Film, television, theatre and more are available to all of us.

It can be hard to take a minute to and reflect with the times changing so rapidly around us. It is easy to lose sight of the opportunity many of us have had along with the exciting future that is beautifully unpredictable.

Buy a sandwich for that homeless man outside the coffee shop, call your family and friends to just say hi, and smile to a stranger.

It’s also important to remember that today isn’t the only day you have to do it too.

President’s Day – The Most Popular of Holidays!

One of the most celebrated holidays in the United States, Presidents Day is a time to… not be able to mail a package or swing by the bank. Perhaps it’s time we try to make it a little more fun than just a way to delay some minor chores.

Getts-website-banner-11314Of course you will have to start off with a classic presidential wig, and perhaps some colonial period clothing and furniture to set the scene. I for one may even check out American Duchess Company for some shoes that would fit the time period but were made to fit properly.

tn_1200_ceramic_tower.jpgOnce everything is together we can set off some pyrotechnics (I’m a real sucker for fireworks) and eat some BBQ.

Who knows, maybe together we can truly celebrate Presidents Day the way our Founding Fathers wanted us to. At the very least we will have an excuse to use some vintage beer taps I found at California Beverage.
