St. George Kustoms

Ever been to the beach, enjoying the sights, when you saw a guy zooming by on a crazy looking bike? Believe me, you weren’t imagining things. More likely than not you saw Randy testing out one of his new creations.

Where some people spend their time creating themed environments St. George Kustoms pedals off in a different direction. Whether the themed bike you are looking for involves spiders, poker chips, or even an electric guitar Randy will make it happen.

Specializing in outlandish bikes St George Kustoms can design and build your dream bike or sculpture. So stop spinning your wheels and ride on over. If you don’t believe it can be done, just ask. You may find that you “spoke” too soon.

Marc’s Creature Company

There’s no reason to be scared. Marc will hold your hand through the scary parts of making an animatronic animal or monster come to life. His years of hands on experience with hydraulic puppetry give him an edge over most when creating what you could only imagine.

His long list of credits include the Queen Alien and Predalien from Aliens vs Predators, Godzilla and baby Godzilla, Flying Reindeer from Santa Claus 2 and 3, a T-Rex from Jurassic Park 2, Singing Plants, a Time Machine, really a couple of decades worth of animatronics.

Their services include welding/fabricating of props and rentals, sculpting, mold making, creature design, movie cars and more. They also have a complete machine shop to work with your needs.

Marc has a handle on it so there’s no need to worry… unless of course you run into Godzilla.

Debbies Book Gets an Upgrade

It has always been our goal to get the information our users need to them in a way that they can depend on. We have listened to input from many users and applied it to the newest update.

The first thing you will notice is that there is no longer a required log in. You will still need to log in to use features such as “My List”. For those who don’t know, My List allows you to create a printable pdf file, with a handy notes section, of important companies you come across in our database.

The second change is a complete revamp of our search interface. We have replaced the three boxes with something we believe will be much more straight forward to our users. Here is a breakdown of these new searches:

Look for a specific company by using “Search by COMPANY”.
If you already know who you want the contact info for or are curious what else they offer, search for the name of the company in this box.

Look for a specific category by using “Search by CATEGORY”.
This search will bring up on the left hand side all categories that directly match what you are looking for. An example would be to look for “Rugs”. This search will bring up a couple of clickable categories that may match what you are looking for to left under the search fields.

Look for a specific keyword by using “Search by KEYWORD”.
This takes what you are looking for and browses all of our descriptions. As we continue to develop theses companies’ details the search will become more and more comprehensive.

There is always a Feedback link in the upper right hand corner of every page. If you think of something that we might be able to do let us know. If you appreciate a certain feature feel free to tell us so!

The Barn Yard

Dennis has created a barn yard of animals both large and small. If you drive out on Sierra Highway you can’t miss seeing his large assortment of farm animals even from the highway.

But Dennis doesn’t just have animal props. He has specialized in the restoration, repair and building of wagons, buggies, wagon wheels, and many other western themed antiques. The Barn Yard is not open to just anyone either. You better have an appointment so you can spend some time and view the large collection of Western Americana he has available. Be careful where you go however, as you might also run into an over-sized chicken or cow along the way.

War Horse, the Play

The puppetry of War Horse is on a scale I have never seen before. They breathe, they gallop and kick. The skill that is displayed by the puppeteers on the stage of this piece creates living animals with all the personality that comes with them.

This world renowned play, War Horse, has come to visit us in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre. Most of the London cast came with it as well, as War Horse continues it’s national tour of the United States.

Not to be confused with the very different rendition of this tale by Steven Spielberg, this is the story of a young British farm boy trying to find his horse during the time of WWI. Using oversized puppets, often manipulated by multiple people, animals like the boy’s horse are recreated with realism.

The puppets were fabricated by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and are what make this show so fascinating. If you have a chance, grab some tickets to this before it gallops off to another city.

Modernica Props

Modernica has a great collection of vintage mid-century modern furniture ― unique and distinct pieces that capture the era perfectly. What is really great is that Modernica has multiples in many of its items and in a great selection of colors.

The prop rental house is located on 7th Place in downtown L.A. where Modernica houses its furniture production facilities and offices. They’ve expanded into a larger warehouse space. One would think five acres would be enough, but not for Modernica. The company is growing by leaps and bounds.

Woody’s Electrical Props

Even before sci-fi was hip, there was Woody and his futuristic props.  Woody was one of the first to start up a prop house building desk consoles and radio station dressing. His vision was high tech. He was ahead of his time.

My first connection with Woody was in 1977. He was the go-to guy for monitors, turntables, desk consoles and radio station dressing. Back then, Woody was on Wicks in Sun Valley. Now, Woody’s is located in North Hollywood on Craner Ave.

He has remained true to his vision, creating the best electronic dressing for mission control, computer rooms and military sets. Fantasy filmmakers need only to go to Woody’s to create that high-tech, sci-fi, futuristic look they need.

Premiere Props

When Premiere Props first opened its doors, the prop house was located on Vanowen St. in North Hollywood. Filled with Western dressing and busting at the seams, Premiere outgrew the Vanowen location and moved to a large warehouse on Sheldon St. in Sun Valley.

You’ll find everything from bicycles and blacksmith tools to wagons and witch doctor paraphernalia. Premiere’s warehouse is again busting with a huge variety of classic props for all kinds of set dressing needs. There’s no website, but you can give them a ring at (818) 768-3800.

Now located on Holdrege Ave. in L.A. near Culver City, Ob•jects rents unique pieces from classic to contemporary, and you’ll find the staff very knowledgeable. Check out their online collection. It’s still evolving as more items go up, but you’ll get an idea of the many styles of furnishing available for your project.

If you need anything, V.P. and general manager Fred Arnes is always accommodating too.
